Boss-rush fundamentals — Focus, Talismans, and Hub progression.
Rubinite is a dark fantasy boss rush from Cup Dog Games (Steam July 22, 2026). This Rubinite beginner guide is the on-ramp: Focus beats button-mashing. Verified July 25, 2026 · Steam.

Every Blood Recipient hides a Pure Blood Crystal that only Ruby's Crimson Eyes can see. Focus is how you read that crystal, bank Marks, and deal real damage. Treat this section as the spine of the whole Rubinite beginner guide — if Focus feels awkward, stop grinding bosses and drill this loop on the first arena.

Hold the Focus input while aiming at the boss. Ruby's observation cone narrows toward the stick direction and a numeric counter rises while the read stays on target. Standing closer fills the gauge faster; hanging at the edge of the arena slows it. Getting hit cancels the charge you were building — so Focus is a commitment, not a free aim-bot.
When the observation read completes, Marks stack on the crystal (up to three). Approach a marked target and release a Critical Thrust for the fatal damage the fight is built around. More Marks = harder payoff. Spending the Thrust also clears the Marks you were holding, so releasing on a single Mark is usually a waste unless you are finishing a tiny remaining health bar.
A last-instant dodge banks a Mark without a long Focus hold — and Perfect Dodging while already Focusing fills the meter much faster. Use Focus when the boss is recovering; use Perfect Dodge when attacks are chaining with no safe gap. Full timing notes live on the Perfect Dodge guide; the dedicated Focus system page covers Marks and Critical Thrust in depth.
Ruby can throw Focus darts for ranged pressure, and some aerial slam patterns are answered with darts rather than a roll. Grabs often need a different defensive input than a standard dodge. Later Blood Recipients chain these answers back-to-back — the beginner mistake is treating every attack as "just dodge."
Rubinite returns you to a home base after every attempt, win or lose. The Hub expands as you progress — new rooms unlock gameplay tools and story beats — and it is where Blood Dust becomes Talismans and skill-tree upgrades instead of a number on a death screen.
| NPC | Role |
|---|---|
| Roy | Rescued Ruby; mentor / orientation at the Hub; story beats between bosses |
| Wichiwi | Talisman craftsman — turns Blood Dust into build options · Talismans |
Blood Dust does not vanish when a run ends. You keep what you earned, and pushing a boss to roughly half health pays a bonus chunk even if you die afterward. Spend it with Wichiwi between attempts — see Blood Dust for the full loop and why "one more attempt with empty pockets" is usually wrong.
Blood Dust also feeds Ruby's skill tree: new techniques (including Focus follow-up strikes) and passive buffs. Talismans often trade a boon for a drawback — they do not replace learning a boss, but they let you bias toward Perfect Dodge windows, safer Focus holds, or greedier Mark stacks. The free Steam demo covers about 40 minutes with two bosses — The Beast then Guardian Faye — which is enough to learn Focus before the full campaign's roughly eight Blood Recipients and Witch Alcina. Use the demo as a training arc, not a speedrun.
The store listing and early coverage both lean controller-friendly — Focus aim with a stick is how the observation cone is described in reviews. Keyboard works, but if Focus feels sticky, try a pad before blaming the mechanic.
Rubinite wears Souls-like tags, but it is not an open-world stamina hike. It is closer to Titan Souls / Eldest Souls: learn a pattern, find the Focus window, punish, rinse. Death is tuition that still pays Blood Dust.
Most early frustration in this Rubinite beginner guide path comes from fighting the design instead of reading it.
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Mashing light attacks | Treat blades as spacing tools; damage comes from Critical Thrust |
| Focusing from max range | Close in — observation fills faster near the boss |
| Releasing Thrust on 1 Mark | Hold for 2–3 unless finishing |
| Dodging on wind-up, not impact | Perfect Dodge wants the hit frame, not the telegraph |
| Skipping Hub upgrades | Spend Blood Dust every return — empty bags do not make you "pure" |
| Rushing Guardian Faye cold | Clear The Beast patterns first; Faye is a rhythm exam |
If you only have one hour with this Rubinite beginner guide, run the following loop instead of bouncing between random bosses. It compresses Focus learning into something you can feel in your hands.
Ignore fancy Talismans. In the safest tutorial space you have, hold Focus at close range until a Mark lands, then Critical Thrust. Repeat until releasing at two Marks feels automatic. If you get hit, narrate the reset out loud — that habit stops tilt later.
On The Beast, only chase Perfect Dodge Marks from the homing attack. Do not greed three-Mark Focus holds yet. Three clean impact-frame dodges beats one lucky clear.
Perfect Dodge once, Focus on dash recovery, Thrust at two Marks. That combined loop is the real beginner graduation test.
Cash Blood Dust into a learning Talisman, then peek at Guardian Faye for one attempt only. Stop on the first rage spike — tomorrow's Faye session will be cleaner.
Single-player — confirmed on the Steam store listing.
Plain attacks are weak by design. Hold Focus to Mark the Pure Blood Crystal and finish with a Critical Thrust — see the Focus system guide.
No. Blood Dust is kept on death, and beating a boss to about half health pays extra even on a loss. Details on the Blood Dust page.
Yes — free demo — about 40 minutes, 2 bosses. See the demo walkthrough.
About 40 minutes for a full demo loop covering The Beast, Guardian Faye, Hub upgrades, and early Talismans.
Read Perfect Dodge, then open the bosses hub before your next Blood Recipient.
